Andra
DuRee' Martin was a native Californian raised in the coastal
communities of Santa Barbara and Santa Monica. She studied
in California, New York and Germany. Her fascination with
Glass Art began in Germany in 1981. There she discovered
various techniques and processes that have been applied
in the making
of glass. She was
particularly intrigued with glass fusion, a technique that
was first created by the ancient Mesopotamians during the
Roman era. This process has remained virtually unused until
its resurgence in the 1970's.
With support from her husband, in 1992 she left a 15 year
career in corporate marketing, to pursue her artistic desires
full
time,
hence DuRee Design, Gourmet Glassware. She creates fun, usable
art that reflects not only her personality and her sense
of
humor but her practical side as well.
Andra is humorous, bright and appreciates the need to be
practical at times! All of her work reflects
these qualities.
"I don't really think of myself as an artist in the
traditional sense. What I like most about what I do is the
response I
get when people
first
look
at
one
of
my designs. There is inevitably a big smile and sincere appreciation
and that makes my day. I love nothing better than when someone
comes up to me and says, Oh, I have one of your pieces and
I use it all the time.!"
The Result of her work is artful and fun glassware that
is meant to be used!
